Kinnections Family Development

Kinnect family Development offers a range of family-centered programs designed to support atypical children and their families. Our support options are flexible and can work with what your family needs.

At Kinnections, we believe that if a kid could do better, they would.

With this in mind, we strive to provide families with practical and effective strategies to help manage behaviours and problem-solve calmly and effectively. We know that what works for the easy child next door won’t work for a complex kid, so our program is filled with strategies to work with the atypical and ‘hard to manage’ kid.

Our teams work with the understanding that challenging behaviours occur when a person lacks the skills to adapt and respond effectively to expectations, situations, or environments. So, when a kid is acting out, there is often an unidentified issue that contributes to both the behavioural issues and family friction. We work with your family to explore challenging behaviour patterns, and then help guide your family and child to build new patterns. The Kinnect Family Development intervention approach is informed by the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, which is a non-adversarial, trauma-informed approach to care, developed by Dr. Ross Greene. Our Family Development programs are also informed by Resiliency Theory and the Positive Youth Development Approach.

The Kinnect Family Development programs are developed for families who are caring for really tough kids. These families love their children but are almost out of energy. They don’t quite know what to do next. If this sounds like you, consider our Kinnect House Intensive program

Services

Kinnect House Intensive Program

The Kinnect House Intensive Program is a part-time, out-of-home respite arrangement and intervention program which supports children and youth for 3 nights per week. During the course of this 9-month program, the child/youth is supported to stabilize and develop social, personal, and mental health skills. Parents are coached to increase their parenting skills and to implement personal self-care strategies through the weekly Break Night program. This specialized placement offers a break for both the youth and family from the tension and negative patterns that may have become a part of the family dynamic.

Parenting Tough Kids: Self-Paced

The Parenting Tough Kids Program was developed as a self-paced, on-demand program for parents of kids with tough behaviours. In the video series, our clinicians and highly trained instructors guide parents to increase mental health knowledge and build the skills they need to manage their children’s challenging behaviours more effectively. The parents are taught crisis de-escalation and effectiveness skills to help them remain calm and effective during interactions with their child.

Parenting Tough Kids: Guided

For parents seeking additional supports, individual parent coaching sessions are offered in addition to the Parenting Tough Kids program. The Behaviour Specialist works with the family to go through the Parenting Tough Kids Program material and to individualize the content, ensuring that the family’s specific needs are responded to. Our parent coaches provide comprehensive and individualized support to ensure parents needs are met.

Professional Crisis Workers

Kinnections Crisis Workers pro-actively work with clients to help them to become as crisis-free as possible. When called in during a crisis, our workers seek to provide immediate benefit to the client by enabling them to manage stressful experiences more resourcefully. Our Crisis Workers have specialized training in trauma sensitive crisis de-escalation and are trained to support and encourage kids or adults when they are a risk to either themselves or others.
